Vista Windows update taking hours

I decided to format and reinstall Vista 64-bit today.

Already had Vista SP2, IE8, Office 2007 SP2 updates saved to save time.

Started downloading the post SP2 updates around 16:00, sized between 300 to 400MB's. It's now nearly 23:30 and still around 96MB of updates to download, and that's with me checking for reboot requests and avoiding any idle time.

Now my internet service is pretty decent maxing out 8Mb connection, and obtaining normal updates prior to formatting was fairly quick. So is this a common problem with Vista update when obtaining older updates? Or is it likely to be how my ISP deals with US based traffic?

It's hard to say really, although I noticed my RTM Vista disc takes an absolute age to work through the updates but I was under the impression this was install time rather than time taken to download.

I'm not sure what to suggest really apart from waiting it out and then take a disc image so you don't have to go through the process again.

The last time I did a Vista 64 install that too took a small age to complete. I started the process around 10am and didn't leave the client's until gone 1600.
