Hi guys,

My big rig is poorly and im in need of some help! Its Vista Ultimate 32bit and for some reason this morning when I switched it on it goes through the loading bar and gets to the black screen. If I reset it I actually get a cursor... but thats it, nothing more. I tried doing a restore back to last known good config but that didnt help. I need to have a look into safe mode but if anyone else has experianced the same problem and knows the solution could you let me know!

Many thanks

i had this about aweek ago, tried everything i could but all i could do in the end was reinstall.
might be an idea if you can get into your hdd thro another pc or dual boot and check if nvidia is there as i found that was missing on mine for some reason but i couldnt for hte life of me get it to go back. get important stuff if you cant solve the problem.

hmmm, thats annoying. were you able to boot into safe mode at all? I cant even do that, hangs on the screen just after selecting it and doesnt do anything!

I really didnt want to have to rebuild again :-(

I should be able to get the stuff back or at least I hope I can, system is in RAID so cant move to another system.

sorry for late reply might be to late by now !!
no i couldnt even get into safe mode, first of it wento start up but all i could see was the arrow cursor, reboot came up with nothing and hung there, then everytime after that i couldnt do jack not even safe mode, as i was dual booting with xp on another hdd i could get in and take what i needed before reinstalling.

good luck !!!

Hi guys,

I think the original Vista install crapped itself, and the recovery process said it was unable to either find a problem and do an auto repair. in the end I actually just re-installed Vista without formatting. It actually turned out to be a good plan as I managed to keep all the files as Visa moved 3 folders: Windows, Users, Program Files into Windows.old so have been able to get it all back :-). Still annoying that I have to re-install all the programs though, and I still have no idea what happened to it...

Oh well Thanks for you're help guys.

always handy to have windows 2000 or xp on an old hard drive (if you can't be bothered to make a windows live disc) for situations like this

look into making a 'bartpe' xp disc

it's simple, takes about 10 mins max, and boot windows xp from cd :) (so you can recover files from any hd on any pc)

Well thats the whole point of posting it! :)

Although Im still going to go ahead with a completely fresh install of Windows, I dont like having a messy system drive!
