Last night Vista must have done its "automatic update" and this morning I was greeted with a "failed to load" screen. It said that winloader.exe was corrupt or missing.

I booted up the system using the vista disk and went to the repair section where i had a box asking me to select a device.. There was nothing in there. It gave me an option to load drivers so I clicked it and it allowed me to browse through both drives on my system so I know that they are functioning.

I clicked continue and it took me to a repair screen where i attempted to do a "startup repair" but this achieved nothing.

I read a few posts which suggested using the command prompt to go to C:\windows\system32 and try the bcdedit command. This returned a message saying "the boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found"

Can any of you guys give me any idea as to what to try?

TIA

I would boot from the Vista disk again and enter the command prompt.. Try the following:

Run bootrec

You will see a few options;

/repairmbr

/repairbcd

/osscan

Run repairbcd and see how you get on.
