In a nutshell, my Vista system will no longer boot. It gets to the blank screen after the scrolly bar but before the circular logo appears and then sits there forever with the hard drive light on solidly.
If I boot in safe mode it gets as far as CRCDISK.SYS then stops with the same symptoms.
Now, Googling around it seems this is not an uncommon problem but the solutions are many and varied and there doesn't seem to be any single root cause although the two main culprits seem to be the SATA drives/connections/drivers and USB devices.
Only things that have changed recently are that I switched my SATA controllers over to AHCI a couple of days ago in order to avail myself of write caching but the system has run fine since then and been through a number of reboot cycles.
Of more concern is that, late last night I installed a few new critical updates from MS which completed and said they needed a reboot. I declined this and then just shut the machine down a little later. This morning it won't boot
I've seen quite a few comments connecting this error with Windows Update so I'm wondering if there's a problem here.
Anyone got any ideas on what might be causing the problem? At work right now so won't get a chance to look into it properly until this evening but it's praying on my mind
