Okay have a bit of a problem which I’m getting nowhere with trying to resolve without giving up and going for a full rebuild.

Had a problem with my machine the other day and the upshot of this was that the keyboard driver files (kbdclass.sys & kbdhid.sys) both became corrupted meaning the keyboard (USB) cannot be used.

Device manager was showing the keyboard but had the following message for both drivers:- Windows cannot load the device driver for this device. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Code 39

When trying to update the driver files Vista in its infinite wisdom tells me that the current drivers are the most up to date so no need for any changes (Arrragh!!)

After a bit of reading up and a few trial and error attempts at getting it to work all instances of the driver files have been removed with the exception of what I believe to be the latest copy which I’ve copied to a standalone folder.

Now when I connect the keyboard I can hear the usual USB detect noises but nothing is prompted to request a driver nor does the keyboard appear under device manager (either working or faulty as it was before).

Trying to manually install these drivers via the .inf file doesn't work and pointing at them via the legacy hardware install wizard I’m informed that the drivers aren’t valid.

So my question is any ideas on how to install and what standard drivers for a USB keyboard on Vista x64?

Any help REALLY appreciated as I’ve been tearing my hair out with this one and really don’t want to do a full rebuild.

Thanks

check the bios for 'legacy usb'

try enabling it or disabling it if it's active..

worth a shot before a format

So basicly, windows believes the drivers are installed, when in reality they arn't...

Have you tried copying good files in the place of the corrupt ones?

Yep tried copy the correct files in place but they aren't picked up, but now Vista doesn't believe any drivers are installed.
