Right, i recently got myself 4gb of ram so i really could care less. but any idea why vista x64 is using 1.4gb of ram when my equvilant x86 install was like 900mb? (and im talking about actualy current ram usage, not including cache and stuff like that :) )

i dont mind just trying to work out if its a problem or just a side affect :0

oh and the largest chunk of that is svhosts.exe process using like 200mb of ram

no hard drive thrrashing thou so its dosent seem like its actualy doing owt! lol

It's Superfetch. It caches your most frequently used programs into unused RAM so that they load a lot faster if you need them.

If you load up something heavy like a game, the memory is instantly emptied. It has NO adverse effect on performance, it just puts all that idle memory to use in Windows.

Are we comparing Vista x32 and x64?

64-bit uses more memory because most of the operating system components are all 64-bit native binaries. And of course a 64-bit integer is double the size of a 32-bit one. The kernel for example uses 64-bit values for just about everything. But also the desktop compositor and numerous other "high load" services make a good use of the 64-bit word length.

It's nothing to worry about. In fact you should be happy :)

Ah of course, suppose its got to store all the memory address location thingies in 64bit which is bound to be bigger! cool cool - thanks wasn't worrying in the slightest was just curious :) always learning eh :)

and superfetch with 4gb is lovely.. i've never seen things load so fast. So much so i no longer use firefox preloader (a god send when you have as many addons as i do) becuase windows does the job just fine!

really starting to like this new computer now :)
