Vista

Need more on the parts changed I'm afraid and also the version of Vista OEM or Full fronatal £300 Version that does it all version etc? Or possibly you just wasted a few bucks on OEm rereading your post!!!

Im not so sure about that. I recently changed my hardware and when my activation key failed I rang their phone activation centre and explained to the guy - he quickly gave me a new activation key which worked! This was changing all the parts of my system... i.e. brand new comp.

Just make it clear to them that youve upgraded and that it would be the only copy of the OS on any computer.

Actually I managed to even get a new CD key to a copy of XP when I lost the original box - depends who you talk to I suppose.

What do you mean your not to sure about that?

Thats the way it is. Yes you can ring microsoft but what did you actually say to them, i bet you didn't say i bought a new system.

Your using an illegal copy of windows, end of story.

As if anyone cares, as long as MS activate it, which they will.

Actuallly I did say I built a new system to them. And when i got my XP activation key I told them I had lost my old one. And no neither of them are "illegal" copies. I paid for them so why should I have to pay again for them?

Personallly Id have been extremely peeved If I had bought Vista and then had to re-buy it when I upgraded especially as I used Vista for about 1 day on my old machine as it didnt run properly.

It doesnt say anywhere on the overclockers site that the OS can only be used once and for one system and you wont be able to use it again if you wished to upgrade. And Im not sure it says that in the actual manual either. And I dont think its what microsoft intended. Otherwise why would they train their call assistants to help people with genuine activation problems like me?

Its part of the Micrsofot EULA. If your buying an OEM version of windows, install and then activate, its then bound to that system (motherboard) so changing the motherboard will be invalidating your license. You will then have to buy a new copy of windows.

I didn't write the rules im just saying thats the way it is.

If he TOLD them he had a brand new comp and they chose to activate it knowing that informaiton, how has he personally done anything illegal?

Exactly. He informed them as to what he'd done. They chose to give him a new key..where's the problem?

Yes, OEM copies of the Microsoft Operating Systems only allow you to use it once on a system. It's bound to the system's motherboard. However, in this case, Microsoft chose to give him a new key...so there's no problem.

Exactly. The EULA does state for OEM that it cannot be moved to another PC, however it's left to discretion whether to activate it. Generally if you change your motherboard, phone them and explain that, they'll reactivate it for you without problems.

If, on the other hand, you keep phoning them up with the same excuse, then they'll start using the EULA against you and refusing.

Contrary to popular misconception, MS aren't a bunch of *****, they have, however, taken steps to ensure they can protect themselves if they need to.
