So im thinking of getting Vista, but not sure if ill encounter any problems.

Currently running XP SP3, not gaming a lot at all at the minute because im looking to build a new, play cod4 for about an hour or 2 every other day.

I have -

-ASUS P5SD2 - FM board, must be a one off line production for my Fujitsu PC model because i cant find info on it anywhere
-An older Dual Core Intel @ 2.8GHz running idle at about 40 with stock HSF
-2Gb OCZ platinum RAM
-XFX HD 4830
-600W PSU

Reason for wanting it is purely because I just do to be fair

But was just wondering if im likely to encounter any problems, higher temps slower load times etc. that would be big enough reasons to leave my machine on XP.

New build wont be for a while and I dont really do Windows software so I dont know if ill be able to install it on my new machine also and not worry about "this has been used on another pc, GTFO" situations.

Also whats the difference between retail and OEM software?

Cheers

I would leave your machine as XP, you would need to ensure all your components have Vista drivers and are compatable with Vista.

Difference between Oem and Retail is:
Oem is tied to the board it was first installed on and you can upgrade any part you like bar the motherboard.
Retail - You can upgrade any part of the pc belongs your only ever running one instance and get support from Microsoft.

Personally i would'nt bother with Vista now unless you can get a really good deal. Windows 7 will be out at the end of the year, you can try the RC in a couple of weeks, and is meant to be much better.

I was anti-vista at one point as it was such a bloated resource hog. Now i have got it trimmed the way i want it i quite like it. I have Xp on one drive and Vista on another in my gaming pc and i rarely use XP on it now. I have the 64bit version and it uses all of my memory instead of the 3.25Gb that XP see's and i can finally play my games in DX10. Most of my games have been moved from the XP drive to the Vista drive and i have'nt come across any compatibility problems yet. Vista installs faster and also installs most drivers for hardware. Hardware doe'snt particularly run hotter apart from DX10 stressing things more. Otherwise it's business as usual. Vista also loads quicker than XP. It does with 4GB of ram anyway. I still have XP on my Internet/general purpose pc and that is'nt going to change for a good while yet.

Retail means you can change the hardware without worrying if you need to re-activate the OS. You also get free support from MS. OEM is supposed to be just for the pc you first put it on and the only support is paid for. If you upgrade the motherboard etc then you are supposed to buy a new copy. In practice MS will usually re-activate it anyway. If you buy upgrade you get a retail version for a price mid way between OEM and Retail. I got a Upgrade version of Home Premium 32bit brand new for £45. I then sent off to Microsoft for the 64bit disk which cost me £7.20. A total of £52.20 and i basically have a full retail version. There are ways to install the upgrade version without upgrading from anything. :)

Righto, Ive only touched on Windows 7, went to see if there was a beta but they're not giving them out now and i've only seen the video demo on the microsoft website but it looks decent.

Considering its not out till later on, I may invest in that at the same time I do a complete build and get a retail copy incase of future upgrades.

Will probably be saving for an i7 system so hopefully everything will be running nicely, it'l be a nice experience to have a PC that runs while you arent sitting there waiting for it to die :)

Cheers for the advice

I haven't heard anybody have any problem at all with it other than the first few months of it's life. Every manufacturer worth their salt has released drivers now in those cases where vista didn't include a generic one.

No excuses :-)

Save your money. Does your PC do what you want?
It probably does so why spend the money.

I don't think it's worth it at this time unless you really need something from Vista that you can't get in XP.
