vistas gadgets vs apples widgets

Microsoft copied 'gadgets' off of Konfabulator (a popular Mac utility).

Once Apple heard what Microsoft had planned for Vista, they too copied 'widgets' off of Konfabulator. Although that wasn't the only idea they pinched off of Vista, as we all know :D

I think it is important to note that Apple pinched them off and shipped it more than two years ahead of Microsoft.

I think it'd probably a bit more accurate to say that Apple got it from Konfabulator and MS got it from Konfabulator and Apple.

Maybe they just thought it wouldn't make the final version like so many other things Microsoft have promised and so wouldn't get noticed :p ;)

As much as i'd like to pipe up and say "oh...apple were/are the ones that designed & invented all of the news in Vista" i won't ...

If anyone watched Apple's WWDC keynote last month they made a huge point of saying how superior there new operating system will be to Vista (which they'll be right, they have everything Vista has and more) and that they were the brains behind it all...

I'm not to sure who invented what, but Apple certainly apply the technology a whole lot better than Microsoft do ... it's as if they are constantly trying to keep up with everything else in the industry, and adding bits in here and there to do so.

Maybe one of the reasons Microsoft seems to be so out of date is because they release there OS every 4/5 years ... so when they actually started Vista way back in 2002 (i think it was) the technology was completey different back then.

No it was off konfab, just its taken ms an ice age to get vista ready. And apple got it rolled out sooner :)

I'm not surprised that "Apple do technology better than Microsoft do", you forget that Windows is designed from the bottom up to work on perhaps millions of different system configurations, whereas Apple only have to program for their dozen or so products.
To be fair though, I've noticed that Microsoft is taking notice of what the market demands, rather than specifying things themselves and forcing people with it. The latest Vista build (which I tried for the first time today) has some great touches to it, many of the smaller 'tweaks' I saw were things which I previously had to download extra programs to do on my existing Windows XP install.

It can really only be a good sign of things to come, Microsoft are being forced to compete now which means there's more innovation in the Operating System market. It's kinda like the ATI/nVidea scenario, the fierce competition provides the end user with constantly updated products.

What you have to remember is that Apple have to make an OS to fit only a few computers, MS have to be able to make it fit anyh combination of components, and is inherintly more difficult. Plus, when MS make an OS it actually works, doesn't crash with no reason, and isn't a nightmare to use (fonts on a mac anyone??)

At work i have 100 Windows xp desktops, none of which give me any problems, and if they do, its usually easy to fix, simple stuff.

I also have one iMac G5 which, when it goes wrong, which is quite often, takes ages to figure out, like when originally installing all the software on it when we got it, you then have to install Suitcase to use any new fonts, or to use fonts in general, then you try to print to a Canon colour photocopier, or even a HP laserjet, and your there all day trying to get it to work.

Macs look nice, and thats it. No use to anyone except deisgn people who wear beret's and polo necks 'cos they think its cool.

lol, i don't think so mate...

I don't see how you can be having so many problems with them, and think so little of them ... you can't be very good at whatever you do

lmfao, if you have problems doing that then your not doing it right.

Myself and my dad have two Color Laserjets, type in the IP and it was done in 30 seconds.

Font, well my dad uses over 200 and OS X is fine without suitcase...

I've setup over 50 macs now, from MAc OS 8 to the latest OS X and I've never had a single problem...

CR.

As for Windows, my bros PC which is Folding at Home stable crashes atleast once a day, not from being unstable, cos it does it at stock but because of it getting confused abut something. I can't be bothered to fix it because something else will break in the mean time

Yep. MS had loads of things white papered & slated for Vista long before Apple put them in OS X.

It doesn't usally take MS 5 years to release home OSes:

Windows 3.1 (1992)
Windows 3.11 (1993)
Windows 95 (1995)
Windows 98 (1998)
Windows 98 SE (1999)
Windows 2000 (1999)
Windows Me (2000)
Windows XP (2001)
--FIVE+ Year Gap--
Windows Vista (2007)

Apparently never to happen again...(!)

That 5 year gap was mostly caused by the massive repercussions that the Codered, Blaster and Sasser worms sent through the halls of Redmond.

Although Vista is a technology release, crammed full with tons of new stuff. It will take years and years for third party developers to even scratch the surface.
