Visual tearing issues with Crossfire 5770 setup

Hey everyone,

I'm running a pair of Sapphire 5770s (the regular ones, not Vapor-X), at stock speed.

I get this weird visual artifact of tearing about 1/3 of the way down from the screen. It looks very similar to having V-Sync off, as it's as if the upper 1/3 of the screen is slightly out of sync with the bottom 2/3s.

However, V-Sync is set to always on in CCC and within games, when applicable. I do not notice this in-game when playing Just Cause 2, for example, but it's very obvious in its menus. Other games with the same issue are Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 (all the time) and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom (side-scrollers make it painfully obvious).

I'm on Win7 64-bit Pro with Catalyst 10.6. I've formatted and reinstalled Windows, tried various versions of Catalyst to no avail.

The only thing that cures it is disabling Crossfire with all other settings equal.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks!

sounds like a crossfire problem maybe caused by some sort of microstutter and their being too much FPS hence while side scrollers and menu's show it up worse
have you done the crossfire check list

make sure psu is good
check all conecctions are good
try 2 x fire bridges instead of 1 or 2 if your already using 1
tried swapping cards around in their pci-e slots
just try check the obvious first

and remember not all games are designed to work flawlessly with x-fire some games don't even work at all. If it troubles you a lot then just turn of cat a.i and use 1 card to play that game instead of 2

I just installed the 10.6 today had same sort of problem. i suggest you try something like vantage which is direct x 10 if thats ok then try DX11 benchmark. It only happened to me with heaven benchmark and Bad Company 2 which is Direct X 11.

I went back to 10.5 all is ok now. It may not be same sort of problem having not played the games you mention just an idea.

bigjimmy, isn't the "too many FPSs" issue what V-Sync should take care of? It seems like V-Sync is not working properly when Crossfire is on. The PSU should be fine (it's a 700W Cooler Master Silent Pro).

I've reseated the cards a few times, and tried changing the bridges around as well as running with 2 bridges and it didn't matter.

TheBiznes, this happened with every version of Catalyst I've had.

v-sync don't work in menu's usually and side scrollers don't usually have any v-sync (well that works very well anyway) i wouldn't force too much in catalyst i would let applications control the most of it as you can sometimes run into problems forcing presets especially in older games. Let me know how you get on with this as it would be interesting to know what the cause was if you ever find it.

I'll try Rivatuner tonight, Biz, and report back.

bigjimmy, you may be right, but I'm pretty sure a single 5770 would get more than 60fps in the least demanding games I mentioned.

The 10.6 drivers have had a lot of reported problems with crossfire and should be avoided. Use the 10.5a hotfix drivers and app profiles, they are very good. Have you tried disabling crossfire to see if it still does it with a single card?

This has been a problem with the crossfire drivers for as long as I've had my ati cards. The 10.4s didn't have vsync at all (even if you forced it) and all the others do a half arsed job.

You can minimise the effect by forcing triple buffering, but I've basically given up hope that ATI are ever going to fix vsync under crossfire and conceded to live with it till my next upgrade cycle.

jkulas, I'm impressed that I don't see anyone else mentioning this. The issue is glaringly obvious to me and is enough to make me think that I should have sold my first 5770 and gone with a single-card setup instead of adding the second one.

I for one can not mention it because i have never had that issue with CF 1900xt, twin, triple & quad 3870 & now CF 5970 4GB Sapphire Toxic.

So they may be some logic that the issue in the minority as to why its not mentioned so much across the various forums.

It's the in game vsync setting conflicting with ccc try turning vsync off in the game and forcing with ccc or the opposite
finding the game ini and editing that to vsync =true etc

I found the exact same thing can happen to me with pro evo 10 and I am running 1 5770 card cant remember how i fixed it but i think the game ini or setting to off in the game then on

Will double check this and report back, I did play tf2 last night quite a bit, and I didn't notice it happening on the 10.5a's with 23rd june profiles. This could just be that my brain is filling in the gaps though ;)

Don't touch the 10.6's if you're running crossfire, even the people that say they run fine seem to have taken a hit in performance in most cases. Hopefully the forthcoming 10.7's will be solid.

Are the 10.5s available from the ATI website now the hotfix ones or would i need to track them down? Also having problems with crossfire - 2x 4890s - in BC2...

To update this, I tried disabling vsync in TF2 while it was forced on in CCC. Immediately got the top half of the screen tearing. If I set vsync on in both it seems fine.

Your only got the ATI driver & CCC installed for your gfx cards & no other gfx card software ?
