hi all just had had my first taste of vr, ie went past game in Trafford centre, had a quick go and was impressed, I had previously tought nah not for me ill stick with my 40" 4k monitor cant see vr being very good, but hey ho it was pretty damn good and will only get better, so the question vive or oculus rift.

Now Touch is available both are comparable. The Rift is slightly more comfortable to wear, the Vive has a more elegant tracking solution.
If you plan to do more seated or standing VR then I'd get the Rift. If you have the space and plan to do more room-scale VR then get the Vive.

The other question is whether you want to keep things on Steam, or branch out into Oculus.

For me, everything is on Steam so convenient to keep it in the same place.

I've not tried the oculus but have the vive Personally I think vive would be the best choice. It has 360 room scale out if the box with motion controllers so no need to buy extra controllers or Base stations.
It's runs through steam so there will always be games with free mods. I don't find the headset uncomfortable and can happily play it for a few hours a time although your face will.ger sweaty lol a lot of oculus games work with the vive fine especially if you use revive launcher. You can play your games in theatre mode so basically play any of your steam games in a virtual cinema with a huge screen.
Also just be aware that you will need more space than you think even for standing... eg I was playing sports bar vr last night playing pool not a game that requires huge amounts of movement at all but I found I would constantly be hitting things or bumping into them as I wasn't playing in my normal area of play that I use for room scale because I figured I would have plenty as it was standing only....
Also not sure if rift had this or not but on the vive you can have a camera show up on your controllers while on the dashboard so you can check the space around you without having to keep taking the head set off

I got the Oculus Rift (4K user) and I am very very happy.. just waiting for the touch controllers for all the "other" fun, steering wheel already here.

Even with 1 sensor room "scaleish", is within tolerance for me (small area), if you have something bigger than 2x3m go with the Vive as the cables are longer or get extenders for the Rift. The Rift also runs Steam VR well for most games but you will need the touch controllers for the full experience.

I have 2mx3m and it's just fine for me

In terms of the "3D" area there's the Guardian System on the Rift so you don't bump into things.

rift owners will reccomend rift, vive owners will recommend vive.
Chances are good whichever you choose you'll be happy with. It does seem though if you have the space for roomscale then vive is the one to get, being built specifically for it.

well, I own the rift, but have tried both lately. And I agree with what Rilot said above.

The two big differences are roomscale and controllers. To me the Rift is a little more comfortable, but certainly not enough to make me go for one over the over.

Roomscale, if you have a large area then the Vive is probably your best choice.

But, the rift's controllers are excellent. They are so natural to use. After using both the vive wands seem a big step back and ruin the immersion.

The best thing would be to demo both if you can. But, I would follow Rilot's advice if in doubt. Both are good buys.

so next question is has anyone tried vr with the steam link so you can play in another room, and if so how well does that work

It mainly depends on what you intend to use it for. If you want it for say racing games etc where you're sat in once position just moving your head about, then go for the Rift since it's a lot cheaper. But if you want to play games where you're actively moving your arms and around in a smallish space then get the Vive.

VR won't work with the steam link and if it did the latency would be too slow to be comfortable. I've tried both the Rift and Vive, The Vive was definitely better for room scale but I bought the Rift as I had a limited space and the Oculus has the bigger games library without any hacks as most Steam VR games work with both Rift and Vive once you have the touch controllers.

A lot of people ask this question and give this response, but it's not the whole story.

It confuses a lot of people but the Steam Link is advertised as "working with the Vive" because it lets you mirror the game being played to your TV.

If like most people you have the Steam Link in another room for your PC (i.e. the purpose of the device in the first place) this likely isn't that great a feature because you can't see what the person is doing in the real world - which can be half the fun.

However, it does give you a wireless (or network based) way to extend what is being shown on your monitor to something like a projector so you could see what your friend is playing on a bigger screen.

In the real world I've yet to find anyone actually making use of this feature in a meaningful way as if you've got your computer in the same room as your bigger screen most people will have it hooked up with an HDMI cable already.

P.S. On topic, having both, I find it next to impossible to recommend one other the other.

Subjectively the Rift has the better screen, controllers and headset comfort.
The Vive has the better tracking solution that works better with larger rooms without extra cost (i.e. 3rd sensor for the Rift)

Ignore the fact the Vive has a camera, I've even disabled mine, it's just not that massively useful in its current state.

However, I'd say the Vive is the most robust solution out the box as it's least likely to cause you issues with USB compatibility/overloading and the tracking solution is easier to setup/more flexible.

I'd be interested in a bit more info on why you think the rift screen is better, I thought they were the same res. I'm still holding off, but as I play mainly racing games saving £200 appeals to me.

Not tried a Rift but although they're the same resolution the lenses/setups are different.

Rift uses 'hybrid fresnel' lenses, and is setup to offer a narrower FOV, this supposedly reduces the 'screen door effect' but increases 'god rays'.

Vive uses traditional fresnel lenses and has a wider FOV, more screen door effect but less god rays.

But the differences seem minor, most people seem to say that a back-to-back comparison can show the difference but probably not enough to notice it in more general use.

I bought my Vive for primarily iRacing and Elite Dangerous, however the price difference wasn't £200 as I needed a new graphics card anyway and overclockers had the Vive + 1070 deals, made the price difference closer to £80 iirc, with the benefit of 'roomscale'. Glad I went for the Vive in the end as roomscale is, imo, worth it, but the Rift was very tempted on the initial assumption I'd mostly use it seated.
