So I have a cosmetic item I'm about to sell on steam for what will almost cover a Vive especially with the Black Friday deal tomorrow, I'm just wondering what are they like these days? I mainly sit down so won't really be able to stand up and move about at all, it's a lot of money to drop on one so just after some views and opinions please.

Great thank you all for taking the time to reply, looks like you've saved me some money :) I had a DK2, I guess they've come a long way since then (from what I've read.)

Sorry for being stupid guys but you've mention extra sensor, I'm not sure what that is. I can see the Rift for £350 with touch controllers and 6 games, am I missing something?

Thanks

The rift comes with two sensors which can be used for room scale but some people have found tracking issues. You can buy a separate 3rd sensor to help with tracking, though a lot of people say it works just fine with 2.

If you plan to mainly sit while playing 2 sensors will be fine. You can always add a 3rd sensor later if you feel you need it
Ahhhhh ok mate, makes sense. Thank you

Yeah, the 2 sensors. Luckily, these come with the bundle :p

The sensors are basically web cams. The Rift headset and controllers all emit short, infrared pulses, which are invisible to us (although you may be able to see using your phone's camera). The sensors use these lights to track position. It's known as constellation tracking.

The 2 supplied are intended to be placed in front of you, on either side of your monitor. But that has the problem where if you turn around, the sensors won't be able to see the controllers. To help with that you can try placing one infront and the other behind or in diagonal corners, usually higher up and pointing a little downwards. This still leaves some blind spots where your arms may block line of sight to a controller. If that is an issue then you can purchase a 3rd sensor. I believe the system supports up to 6 sensors, but most of us use 2 or 3.

Ahhhh ok that makes perfect sense, thank you for the explanation, video and link it's appreciated.

Sorry for more questions, the sensors that come with the rift do they come with a stand? Trying to figure out how to have one behind me. Really unsure if I should go for 2 or 3 sensors, the controllers come with one don't they? They are always £99 that's not a black Friday deal is it?

Yes, they are about 8-9" tall. The stands unscrew leaving about an inch, which will fit a standard camera mount. You can get wall mounts from the bay, etc. Some use 3M strips to stick to the wall. I have just ordered some car windscreen suction cup camera mounts to try.

If interested, try searching the bay for -
  • Car Windshield Suction Mount Tripod Holder for Mobius Action Sports Camera LWUS
  • Printed Oculus Rift Wall Mount
  • Camera Wall Mounts
YouTube has many videos covering many styles, just search for "oculus sensor mount".
Great mate that's awesome, thank you.

I think I am going to get a 3rd sensor but they seem rather pricey! I might do as suggested a few posts up and by the touch controller and just use the third sensor from that.

I've also seen this;

You can get some discounted bundles of games too, out of the below which would you say would give me the best VR experiences?

Thanks

If I could give you gold on here I would, thank you mate. I'm in to all sorts of games really, I guess my main interest is FPS, I will be pre ordering Doom and Fallout 4 VR for sure. Good idea about checking YouTube for the different game bundles. Thank you for taking the time to reply and explain all that and thank you for showing me the settings you're using so I can just copy them as I have a 1080ti also :D

How is the audio/headphones that come with the Rift or am I better off using my own headphones? I've ordered one of the 5 meter cables you mentioned as one of the sensors will have to go behind me on the wall. I think I'm going to order another set of touch controllers and have the 3 sensors, I have a massive Laz-e boy chair so I think it will struggle when I move around as the back of it is so big.

I also wear glasses for long distance driving, would I still need to wear them for this even though the screens are close? I'm sure I read a long time ago you can actually get lenses made for your glasses prescription so I'll have to check that out if I need to wear them.

I do have a PS4 pro pad which I assume will work exactly the same as the xbox one pad?

Thanks mate.

Ok thank you everyone, makes sense about the sensor I will order one then for sure. That's a shame about the out the box support for Doom/Fallout especially as they were the two main games I was looking for although I'm sure at some point down the line it will be supported... I hope. Just annoying when multiple techs our out and you can't just have one to play everything. Thank you for all the replies everyone :D

Thanks too @Wrinkly I've ordered 3 wall mounts and now that thing to put over the top too lol oh an an extended cable lol :D

So any decent steering wheels with the Black Friday deals as I'm saving some money not buying the Vive hah.?
