VLANs or Subnets - Which is preferred for a network with about 20 people in 6 groups?

Although its great for security is really necessary to have numerous subnets/VLANs for such a small number of people?
Maybe if certain groups need more security, add a subnet/VLAN for those but i'd personally be tempted to keep it quite simple.
I guess it really depends on the nature of the business.

Its for a university assignment so I might up the number of hosts lol

Definitely up the number of hosts and include clear reasons for requiring VLANs, even if those reasons are fabricated.

VLANs and multiple subnets are a necessary reality in many environments but ultimately introduce degrees of complexity (but also segregation and control) that arent present in a flat single subnet environment.

Security issues, broadcast domains, voice services etc. can all be valid reasons to implement.
