I'm trying to convert a 1GB .mkv file to an .mp4 using VLC's in-built converter, but it's taking bloody ages. Over 3 hours now.

Anyone got any experience of this? Should it take that long?

MKV is a container. Are you trying to make an MKV play on a PlayStation or something? You don't need to convert anything, you just need to remux.

Also don't use VLC for anything, it's bad.

I need to edit the video, but none of the video editing software I've got is able to handle .mkv's so I'm trying to convert to .mp4. Is there any easy way to do this?

Edit: you were right about VLC being rubbish. I just cancelled the conversion and played the file and it's got no sound, plus it still can't be read by Vegas Pro, even though it's supposed to be .mp4 now :(
