VLC + .mkv issue

I'm no the only one with this issue, but recently me and my girlfriend have been having problems with VLC playing .mkv files. Either the video will skip, the scene will freeze and you have to reboot, or it'll freeze and then 5mins later it'll come back.

Anyone got any ideas?

Yeah both using the latest version. Also haven't changed any of the settings at all.

Does the .mk2 play ok in other software?
Could be the file.

.mkv, its for high definition videos.

VLC doesn't handle *.mkv files very well. Use FFdshow with MPC.

Is your system good enough to play them, I had a mate on a piece of crap laptop and 720p mkvs would crash his machine.

VLC has always been a treat for me for mkvs.

Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz
1Gb GTX 280
4Gb Memory

Should be fine for .mkv.

I don't know what it could be, sometimes it works perfect without an issue, then sometimes it stutters and halts.

It ranges from recorded HD video, to trailers of computers games, to TV shows.

How do i do this Ffdshow method?
