Vlc or........

Followed the guide and it has improved video quality on some files but I seem to get a weird issue where if I go fullscreen on my 1440p monitor the screen flickers for a few seconds, if i go fullscreen on 1080p it works fine?

did you do the reclock/refresh rate? If so, that is because your screen is changing the refresh rate automatically.

The only thing I haven't done is make reclock my audio decoder as it isn't showing in my list even after a reinstall.

Odd...

You installed the 32 bit version of MPC?

Reclock isn't really necessary anyway, personally I don't notice the difference with it on and off.

Media Player Classic. I get it and the codecs from shark007.

shark007 used to come with adware bundled with the codecs, and he would lie about it. Not sure if they still do. Very bad practices from the developer, hence why people boycotted him years ago.

This is one of the better guides for manually setting up MPC-HC with madVR. I'm surprised it's suggesting internal MPC-HC's video filters over LAV, though.

PotPlayer trumps the lot in my opinion. It's great out of the box, has more options than both VLC and MPC-HC (probably combined) if you do want to tinker, doesn't require external codecs, moving forward and backwards is more fluent than either in my experience and if you want to use the playlist it trumps both by a distance.

PotPlayer violated a few GPL licenses, which is why the software is not really recommended anywhere. It shouldn't really be available to users until it sorts out its licensing issues.

Just use MPC-BE instead, no need for any dirty codec packs!

MPC-BE is pretty good, however the improvements from MPC-HC don't hit the stable branch fast enough, and the out-of-the-box config is not optimal for many people.

All I use is MPC-BE with LAV filters: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases

Did try MadVR but didn't really see that much of an improvement, not to mention heavier usage as well.

madVR improves the quality of rendering at higher resolution by a significant degree. If you're watching lower quality content on a high resolution monitor, like say 1280x720 videos on a 2560x1440 screen, then the upscaling advantages of madVR really come to fruition.

What I personally use and recommend as a standalone player, which allows you to configure MPC-HC, LAV, madVR and ReClock with a few clicks, is KCP.

Not a fan of chinese cartoons myself, but the guys did a great job and creating an easy setup for a larger audience. It is also constantly updated whenever there is a patch for any of the components. Unless you enjoy reconfiguring your own MPC+LAV+madVR+ReClock setup every time they update it.
