VLC + Vista 64bit = Lock up?

I noticed that when I'm watching a .avi file using VLC player, I get occasional Lockups. My screen/mouse pointer wont move, but the sound is still playing.

The screen just locks up even though I can still hear the show going on.

Is this a known problem or is it just me? or is there a fix to it?

No problems with lockups here and I'm using a fairly old chip (A64 3000+)

Using the latest stable codecs?

What else is running in the background - ie, anything hogging CPU time?

I use the codes that comes with the player. The weird random freezes always happens when im watching a video.

Nothing is hogging my cpu, only utilising like 15-20% tbh.

No idea whats going on, gaming wise its all fine, just when its playing videos, it starts to have random freezes.

Its totally random, it can be fine for 24 hrs and next minute just goes on a fit.
