VM host on USB

So I have a 128gb SSD USB flash drive.

I was originally going install a OS directly on the USB and boot into that.

But now I'm thinking what about a VM host instead?!

Basically I'm wondering if I could have something like ESXi install on the USB drive, and then to install a Linux VM onto that.
BUT from within my current Windows PC.

So I already have windows 8.1 installed, and I would like to continue with that, and just have the ESXi ontop of that if possible?

Then I can move it around to other machines, without having to boot into the USB drive...

Is something like this even possible?

Why have a VM on the USB? Why not a live linux install of some flavour?

You could shove the SSD in as the only bootable drive in your PC, install ESXi/VM and then plug it back into the USB to see if it'll boot. I don't really see the benefit of it over a linux install on the USB though.

You could feasibly do it but it won't run that great. You'd really need something like Virtual PC or VMware Player, etc. If you think what you're trying to do it doesn't really make sense:

Running a Windows OS
Running VMware or such like
Installing a Hypervisor (ESXi)
Running VM's on top of the Hypervisor

Ideally you'd put the Hypervisor at the lowest level. Or you'd use something like Virtual PC to just run a VM and not ESXi.
