VMWare and retro gaming?

I was going to build a retro pc (using old components from up the loft) to play some old games on such as monkey island, tomb raider 1, quake, discworld... you get the idea, but then i realised that maybe i could do it with vmware...

now, i have my doubts that it could cope with gaming, even stuff that old, and i'm not sure which operating system to put on...

could anyone help me out with this train of thought?
 
Why not just use Bootcamp? It's built in...

VMWare's 3D performance was non-existant when I last checked, although I hear they've updated recently, so that may well be different now.
 
the latest vmware fusion has support for DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 2 3D graphics.
