VMWare Backup - asking for xp serial number?

I did a vmware image and tried to run it on the laptop and its asking for a serial number for the xp install.. so I type it in with the other computer turned off and nope! wont have it!

what do I need to do?

Well, it will do, so that everyone isn't using dodgy XP images shared on the internet. You need to enter a retail/vlk serial number (an OEM one wont work due to the fact the hardware has changed significantly)

ah I thought it'd be reading the hardware from the image not the laptop - so a retail xp key will work fine?
