VMWare ESXi Copying Machines?

Can you take the servers offline or is that out of the question. If memory serves on ESXi when the machines are offline you can copy the virtual hard drives and VM config files onto a storage device.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of it will come along in a minute and make me look like a fool though as that is probably not the best way to do it.

VMware converter?

You can use ssh into the esxi box but its a pain in the backside, they would rather you pay for esx and use there backup methods ;)

All i do is take the machines offline, copy them to other storage then copy them to our backup server, using Veem FastSCP which is free.

Yeah it's a bit of a pain, but i do it on the weekend when no one is in the office.

Converter?

The machines are already VM'd - I want to take a easy copy of them to put onto BR discs without using the management console which takes ages.

Ours is based on a NetApp SAN and have Snapmirrored the LUN setup, so there is no downtime.

In your case would recommend using the method dave-lew99 states above but i would use vRanger Pro for the backups.

Ive not herd of FastSCP before, but it looks a good bit of software.

Ah i was under the impression you wanted to move them to other servers
Converter allows you to move them between different vmware servers.

We use vReplicator where I am, although I'm not sure on license costs, it's based per machine though. The machines are snap shotted and copied every 2 hours from one host to another, SAN storage. This is done on the fly to production machines with no downtime. Can be scheduled for replication to any timescale.

It works very well and has pulled me out of a a tight pickle before. Having said that, if you can take them offline Veem FastSCP is very good. It is also a useful tool for managing different storage systems.

Edit:- Benefits are it's all automated and will email you if it gets a problem. No buggering about offlining machines, copying and so on.
