VMWare setup (USB or SSD)

Hi, I'm wanting to give VMWare a try but don't know much about it. I've seen a couple of videos on youtube and in both they run it from a USB stick. The PC I want to put it on has...

256GB SSD (empty but want to put VM machine files here)
2TB HD (contains all my data / videos etc)

Can I install VMWare on the SSD and also use it as the data store for files?

USB, it runs from memory once loaded, putting on an SSD is a waste.

Use the SSD as a datastore.

minimum 1GB , ideally 4GB

Or if you server accepts it SD card is another nice alternative and very cheap.

I had an 8GB Kingston datatraveller USB stick hanging around and it's now been plugged in inside my HP ML110 running ESXi for about 2 years. Works flawlessly.
