Can you install updates using Update Manager if you're using 1 physical host where the the vCenter is running as a VM on that host ?

When I run the updates it gives me the option to shut down VMs to allow it to go into maintenance mode, but will this cause problems if the vCenter is doing the updates and it shuts it down or have the updates from the vCenter already completed by then and the rest is done on the physical host while in maintenance mode ?

I believe you'll either have to use the CLI or export the vCenter to another machine, like a laptop running workstation.

That seems to be what google is saying, I can only remediate updates that don't require a reboot or maintenance mode from the Update Manager. Seems too much of a ball ache for a test environment, at least now 5.1 supports Windows 8 and Server 2013.

It's a test server but it's used by many people as it has around 50 VMs on it, although not all used at once. So I can't risk killing it by playing about with it.

I'm going to leave it for now, will try the 5.1 update 1 using CLI on my own test lab. I already had issues with the vCenter yesterday after the 5.1 update as it was showing all the VMs as orphaned and I couldn't connect/disconnect or remove/add the host, as it was saying the database was full. This morning it was magically working again.

I successfully updated my home test lab using the CLI, was surprisingly easy.

Will wait until we get a second host in the work test lab and some redundancy before I run any more updates.
