Hi we have VMWare running on several blades and we wan't to create a new VM but the software running on it needs a dongle for licensing purposes. Has anyone tried using a USB over IP solution or know of any other solution?

Connect via the ILO dongle then connect to the blade, then VMware - obviously if you have multiple USB devices that might be hard - and also depends on the model of blades, etc.

That looks like a interesting product walnuts. The thing that I am a little concerned about is vmotion, if the VM moves from say blade1 to blade2 will it be effected?

We just use the belkin USB to IP hub. Works for everything we've tried so far.

Can you present different USB devices attached to the hub to different VM's or can you only present the devices to the one server?

Im looking for a product where i can attach several Licensing dongles and present them to seperate VM's.

You can present devices to any server with the belkin client software installed, however one device can only attach to one machine at any given time.

You can however have say 4 dongles attached to the hub, and 4 machines attached to one dongle each.

The VM shouldn't be affected but there is a trial version of app on manufacturer's website if you want to try few things out.

Software really easy to setup. I stuck server software on spare server and shared 2 USB devices. You can then install client software on any VM and connect to any shared USB device.

Software was recently mentioned on Microsoft SBS blog as being reliable and works well with Microsoft OS.
