Someone explain the shared VMs functionality to me.

Will this scenario work:
We have a piece of software that only works under windows XP, we run windows 7 on everything so best way to get around that was to run a windows XP VM, now all 3 people in our office need access to this piece of software.

If we created a windows XP VM in vmware workstation and shared it between the 3 users could we all use it simultaneously to run this one piece of software? OR can one person run it with their control with the other person(s) viewing with the ability to take control?

Need to know if we can do this before purchasing two more workstation licenses

If I understand your question correctly, this. However, why not use VirtualPC on each machine rather than spending money on VMWare workstation?

Or is this a piece of software that acts as a server?

You could get a 30 day evaluation of vm workstation free, create your virtual win xp machines (one for each user). Then access them using vmviewer which is free.

You would not be able to alter the image once the trial expires so get it right!

we are currently running virtualPC on each PC but it's not ideal as the program we're using hooks in to a central database and there are various config files that one person keeps changing on his install, but when he changes them the other two are then out of date. What would be good is if we could just put those files on a network share but it's not as easy as that sadly.

We want everyone to be using the same thing ideally, so no faffing about with updating each others files constantly.

Mainly down to time, takes longer to test it out than to simply ask the question, or so i thought anyway.

The latter is most likely as this is currently possible in ESXi 4. Basically enables multiple connections to one VM but using the same session.

This or Win 7 XP mode if you have the right edition (I think its Ent or Ultimate only)

I'm a big fan of all things VMWare but not the right tool with Desktop OS if you want to share it to multiple users
