I am having trouble VNCing through to a windows 7 machine. We only have the one windows 7 system in work and the rest are XP. I use realVNC for all XP machines but i tried to use it to connect to a windows 7 PC and it wont connect:(

I have tried UltraVNC and TightVNC and cant get them to work either:(

Any suggestions??

As far as i am aware you cant use real vnc to remote into a windows 7 machine. You can use the real vnc viewer on windows 7 to access another machine running XP. For some reason the vnc server function does not support windows 7 which is what you need to be able to access it remotely. I use tight vnc on both my windows 7 machines to access them round my LAN

Yea i have tried it from windows 7 to XP and works but doesnt work from XP to Windows 7.

Starting to think it cant be done either from the reading up on it i have done:(

Thanks

It can be done - I use ultraVNC all the time on windows 7 machines.

Can you explain more detail your set up? (what versions of windows your using for the server and the viewer).

Edit: Just posted this edit from an XP SP3 machine running realVNC viewer - connected to a windows 7 x64 SP1 pro machine running ultraVNC server.

Remember when you install ultraVNC to set the password and tick the allow connection allow viewer control buttons in the admin properties menu. And to also tick the boxes to install the various server services required during the set up.

Download and do a full installation of ultraVNC and make the setup page look like the above.

Once finished set a password and make sure connections are allowed in the admin properties menu (found by right clicking on the server logo in the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your screen).

Any machine you want to vnc to needs to have the server vnc application installed. You can use either tight vnc or ultra vnc just fine remoting into and from windows 7 machines. It just seems real vnc does not support windows 7 fully for some reason

Ok having problem setting password. Keeps asking which user i would like to use to run the program but when i choose one it same window keeps appearing:(

Are you an administrator? You will need to run that as an admin, which is possibly where your having trouble.

In the little test I ran for you the XP machine was in a domain and the 7 machine was in a workgroup so I you should be okay.

I always had problems running Real VNC on windows 7 - it was hit and miss. It would never run the service, so I've changed to TightVNC and it works perfectly

Silly question perhaps, but is the firewall blocking access? I assume the network profile is set to work in Win7?

Not any issues here... I use RealVNC enterprise on:

1 x Windows 7 X64
1 x Windows 7 X86
1 x Windows Server 2008 R2

Just works... no issues at all. Make sure the port VNC uses is open if you're not in a local network, I think its 5900 from memory (go research).

Password isn't set or firewall is blocking it. If it won't let you change the password try elevating the process first by RMB -> Run as administrator

We run Kaspersky on all networked PCs. The windows 7 PC which i am trying to VNC to is standalone and does not have an anti-virus on it. I have disabled windows firewall on it too.

Weird issue

In my last company we used ultravnc on about 200-250 machines
A mixture Win 2000 , Xp and windows 7 without any issues

Have you contacted your IT department for help ?

No problems with VNC'ing on to a Windows 7 x64 here.

A few tips though, make sure UAC is enabled for some reason it likes this. (I think it explicitly states this on the website)
Make sure the view only password is not the same as the service password, otherwise you can see the screen but not do anything.
I've also found that the "disable input for viewers" button on the server properties seems to get ticked from time to time turning it into view only mode.
