I'm at work. I connect to my home PC using VNC, I log into my user account, I'm viewing my desktop. My screen at home will also now be displaying my desktop. Is there any way to keep the screen at home displaying the user login screen?

Hope this makes sense to someone

Remote desktop won`t do what the OP wants and VNC will not either because your viewing the output from your home PC on your screen.

Excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain how you can run VNC while the computer is not logged in?

well in my case, i'm logged in and i've just hit windows key+l for the fast user switching, so basically i'm already logged in

VNC requires a user to be logged on, RDP will work without a user being logged on but as someone physically logs onto the machine your session will get kicked off.

tbh the only way to do what the OP wants is to scrap Windows altogether and install some flavour of UNIX, or installing VMware server and having some virtual machines the user can log into instead. Neither of these is what I would regard as a solution.

Anyway, Ill now file this in the "trying to use Windows in a manner it was not intended pile" and ignore it now

Am i right in thinking... you want to control your PC at home without people in front of it being able to see what you are doing? If that is correct then use Remote Desktop. If you want someone else to be able to log in at the same time and control the system, then you need something like a terminal server.

Correct. I'll look into remote deskop then.

What happens if for example, you have two accounts 'a' and 'b'. 'a' is logged in, but then 'b' also logs in using fast user switching.

If i then tried to use remote desktop to log in remotely to 'a' while 'b' is logged in and in use, what would happen?

Out of interest, what is the purpose of this? I mean, why would you want to control your PC from work not displaying what was going on on it on the screen at home?

it's just if i ever need to access files, or open/close programs, general tasks like that. and there's people at home during the day so it would be better if they didn't see what was going on for privacy reasons

What if somones using the PC at home?

i've got i working fine now thanks guys, just testing it by accessing my desktop from my laptop. thanks for all the help.

off topic now, is remote desktop secure? with vnc i was connecting via vpn first, as i read that it's safer. do you still need to do that with remote desktop?

that's what i just asked about, and what oddjob62 posted the support link for. if someone's logged on, you'll be informed and can either cancel the remote login, or inform the user at home that you're trying to log on
