Usually I just use the free version of RealVNC but my server PC is Windows 7 which the free version of RealVNC doesn't cover.

I have a Win XP SP2 laptop that I want to be able to use to control my Win 7 desktop. All within a local network (Win7 on a wired and Win XP laptop on my wireless) and connected to the same router.

Thanks

Couldn't get it to work? Both are in WORKGROUP and typing in the Win7 PC name on my Win XP Laptop just get a delay as it tries then it fails.

RDP is so easy to get to work. Good to learn how to as its used in almost every corporate network. Also its incredibly secure with its encryption. Cant remeber if VNC is encrypted or not.

On the PC you want to control you need to go into System Properties > Remote Settings and then choose either the second or third option. Then click Select Users to make sure your account is in the list.

Click OK, then OK again.

Now run mstsc.exe from the other machine and type in either the IP or computer name of the PC you want to control. Enter your credentials and hey presto!

One caveat - the PC you are controlling needs to be a Professional version of Windows. There is a way around this for Home users, but I am far too lazy to find the patch/registry fix. All versions of Windows have the RDP client, so only the Host needs to be Pro.
