VOB to AVI?

I've been using DVD Platinum and WinAVIConverter to chance my DVD's to AVI for use on my laptop. I run them off a USB pen to conserve battery power (No DVD or HDD access etc)

These are OK but the loss of quality is more than I'd like. I don't mind waiting for several passes etc as its not a 'I need it now' situation.

Any ideas, Free would be nice but I'll pay if its not too much.

autogk, staxrip

autogk ripping to x264/aac/mkv is about the best you'll get, staxrip is very similar, but downloads all the tools/codecs for you as it requires them.
