Iv just recieved my new vodafone mobile, i foned them up today and apparently with Vodafone you have to provide the pac code @ contract sign up, is there anyway around this??

I did speak to someone a CS but they recon no. Previous number is with o2, i know other providers allow it even after you signed up for a contract.

When i was with vodafone i transferred my old o2 number 2months after i signed the contract,so there should'nt be a problem with them allowing it.

Just threaten to leave them and il sure they will do it on the spot.

You can and I did, you need to go through number porting.

I know about number porting, this is how it is done, but apparently if you are in a situation where you have say:

Current number (been with for 4 years)
New contract

You can only port the number when you sign up for the contract, so vodafone say (other providers let you do this even after you have your new handset)

Its not to much of a big deal, but I would rather keep my same number

Well I got my 5800 on a new contract on Vodafone, phone and SIM arrived. However I had my O2 PAC code, so I call them and they transferred the number accross.

You could always just cancel the contract and resign a new one with Voda if the worst comes to the worst although they really should be able to help you.
