hi since I failed in my last attempt - I'm trying another idea
I have a Vodafone router- one of those black stand up ones with a silver Vodafone symbol in the middle
I have ran an ethernet cable from it- to another router of the same type further down the house
I am told to leave the IP of the first one as 192.168.1.1
change the 2nd one to 192.168.1.3
and cancel the dhcp part of the 2nd one as well
change the settings of the 1st on so it doesn't recognise the 192.168.1.3 on the 2nd one
then it should work
it doesn't
any help appreciated

What do you mean by change the settings on the first one so it doesn't recognise the second?

I have a Vodafone router as my main, with a plusnet router doing the wireless.

I have the Vodafone router set up as normal but I have DHCP handled by a different device and wireless is turned off. [192.168.1.1]

The plusnet router is connected to the rest of the network via its switch ports (NOT WAN) and its DHCP also disabled. [192.168.1.2]

DHCP is handled by PiHole on my network and the scope is set to start at 192.168.1.20 to give me some wiggle room. [192.168.1.254]

How are you connecting the two routers? When you do this they need to be connected together LAN-to-LAN. If the Vodafone router has an Ethernet WAN port it needs to be ignored.

hi thanks- I don't know how really - but I've got it to work- the 1st router was basically connected to the phone line- then the second with an ethernet cable to the first one
disabled the dhcp in the 2nd one- so it apparently acts as an AP- messed around with the IP addresses in both
and it works
only one issue the red light on the base on the second one keeps flashing whereby on the 1st router it is solid red
I'm typing this while connected to the 2nd router so its definitely working
one thing
you have to set the ip of the 2nd one different to the 1st one
then you can enter the settings of each independently
e.g. 192.168.1.1
and 192.168.1.3

So - just in case anyone comes along and finds this tread doing a Google search, as I did - I was able to get this working without double Network Address Translation (NAT) for my NowTV Hub 2 (as the modem router) and my THG3000g Vodafone router as the access point.

I did this as the WiFi on the Vodafone router was much better (stronger) than on the Hub.

I proved the single NAT by following this excellent article from PCWorld - https://www.pcworld.com/article/412237/how-to-identify-and-resolve-double-nat-problems.html. Gordon and the team continue to outdo themselves there, and I highly recommend The Full Nerd podcast as an aside - but I'm getting off point.

I achieved this setup by connecting the modem router (in my case the NowTV Hub 2) to the access point router (in my case the THG3000g from Vodafone) via the ethernet (not the WAN/Internet/Other) ports and turning off "DHCPv4 Server" and "IPv6" in Expert Mode, Settings, Local Network in the THG3000g admin panel.

I also set the THG3000g IP to a static IP in
Network Settings
Local Network
IPv4 Address ofVodafone [sic] Broadband Router

Hope this helps someone.
