Hello all, just here for a bit of advice, HiS eventually came back to me about my faulty 7950 and have deemed it as warranty void, not going to lie - pretty miffed about it, wont be buying any HiS branded hardware going foward.

Anyways on to my query - any advice on what I should do with my pc, I game at 2560x1440 and had* been running crossfire 7950's (boost), with the faulty gpu I'm down to one and would like to see what you think my best option is to go

1: - buy a second hand 7950, pick it up cheap (ensuring it hasn't been used for mining as I know these are flooding the market)

2: buy a new 280 (as they are sort of 7950's)

3:Hold out for a bit and see if there are any single gpus down the pipeline expected to come out that will easily handle 2560x1440 at high-max settigs

Here's the link to previous thread (which has link to previous to thread with pictures too - thread-ception :o) - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18590428

4:- any suggestings from the gen-pop ;P

Thanks for taking time to read and I appreciate any suggestions :)

Why did they deem it warranty void mate? Was it through OcuK?

If it was me, I'd sell the 7950 and get a 290 is funds permit.

Unless you can get a 7950 from known source that hasn't been abused sorry I meant mined :)

Aye through ocuk - I'l seach for the link to other thread and update it - but the fan was coming away from the pcb and I thought I'd try and tighten the 4 back screws to see if it helps - got abit carried away and snapped the head off one of the screws - silly me :-/ lol

Pretty good advice there.

A cheap 290 and maybe add another at a later date or source a second hand/cheap 7950.

That sucks. So it wasn't a case of changing paste and removing a warranty void if removed screw or anything?

No not at all - the cooler hadnt (still hasnt) been removed :-/

whyscotty -so sell the good 7950 and try to pick up a decently priced 290 - could be an option :)

I picked up a 2nd 7950 to go crossfire for the first time ever, and its the best thing I ever did. I got a vapour-x 7950 for a nice 90 quid :p

Granted though... it was off ebay, one thing I always said id never do but I did cause it was so cheap, it probably has been used for mining, especially how its bios had been altered so it was using hardly any power at all even with the boost button enabled, the bios was set to only use half the amount of power as it should do as standard? .. strange. so Ltmatt made me another bios so that its running full power as it should, and now iv even learnt how to make them my self and the cards now, are absolutely identical, both perform the same.

Though with that said about the bios it came with, the card I got off ebay was actually cleaner than my card that iv had for 18 months since new! so who ever had it before must have looked after it. its the only way I can tell the two cards apart because the ebay one is cleaner than mine! and I take good care of my parts lol so he must have been a ocd freak!

So what id do, is if you was happy with your crossfire performance before, get a cheap 7950 as long as it looks tidy, if you wasn't satisfied with your 7950 crossfire performance before, sell both cards list one as faulty and get a 290x :)

Il look into it - might have to get my saving hat on lol

any recommendation on what brand to pick up?

Additionally - any word on these 20nm cards - still delayed etc - so just pick up a card now?

Wait i'm confused here, so is the card working and only the cooler is slightly coming off the GPU part and a screw now has lost its head and you RMA-ed it for that reason ? OR is the card totally dead and HIS won't repair it or send you a new one ?

If the card is working and only the cooler problem, I would take the card apart and reseat it all and remove the screw without a head carefully and get another screw or get a new set of screws that are right size but stronger than the ones they provide.

What he said, that or just fit a universal air/AIO cooler.

The card isnt fully functioning - it does work* but it will eventually kick up artefacts and or freeze up and require a reboot to work - I was thinking of fitting a cooler myself but im not sure if the damage has already been done - In the link I added on my main post I ran through everything I tried - using stock clocks the card would freeze up and fail on firemark extreme -and I have had games freeze on me (time it takes to freeze varys) - a problem that has not happened while running only 1 card

Get the card back and reseat it and apply new thermal paste and make sure the heat-sink and fans are clear of dust. The artifacts are probably because of the cooler coming of the GPU core and as you have shown in some pictures it does look like the cooler is slowly coming off the GPU and needs reseating and re-tightening it up with new screws. I think you wasted time and money sending that back for RMA to be honest would have been cheaper to try fix it yourself first and especially after breaking a head of one of the screws it probably is not making good contact if it is a screw for the GPU core part. Use a thermal paste like IC diamond on it, that sort of paste will reduce the temps of the standard thermal paste and IC Diamond 7 carat or 24 carat (both are same stuff just different amounts of the paste) is pretty thick and will bond well to the heat-sink and GPU core and stop it coming apart, it also none conductive ID Diamond so safe to use on GPU's.

It never went back :) been sitting in it's box, sent the details and pic's to ocuk who passed it along to HiS, might give your idea a go before I spend some money on a new card,

Mate you don't need a new card the card you have is probably perfectly fine and just needs a good clean and as I said re-seating the cooler, new TIM and some new good screws to hold it together and for it to make good contact with the cooler. Give it a go and when you do that card I would give the other card you have in the machine a good cleaning too and maybe replace the TIM on that too. Be gentle with the tightening up of the screws, tighten them up slowly and evenly on the cooler and that way it will make good contact. Also to add maybe get some new thermal pads too when you order the TIM. Take the card apart and measure the thickness of the pads and order the same thickness, incase you need to replace the pads too when you take it apart they may break up or just be tatty and won't stick back on right.

Also have you made sure both cards are using the same VBIOS versions ? If not I would get the same version of the working card and update the one that is playing up with the same VBIOS too and while you're at it check if there is a BIOS update for your motherboard too. You can save the VBIOS of the working card with GPU-Z and flash the other card with it.
