VOIP - in gaming

If i were to purchase the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone two of them for me and a friend, what software could i use to chat to each other in game in games such as COD2 and CnC ZH. Which dont have built in VOIP software, i have been playing around with Ventrilo but i belive it only works with internal networks?
Teamspeak also looks really complicated too! lol it would only be me and my mate in chat...

Skype? Live Messenger? Both easy to setup but perhaps not stellar performance.

ventrilo is by far the best voip software, may look a little dated but compare it to teamspeak and it sounds so much clearer.

also if you get ventrilo you may find yourself having to buy or use someone elses server, as it isnt free.

there is a mix vent for cod2 tho on ventrilo, 194.146.193.203 port 4467, you can go on this and find a channel with your mate as its free to use.
