Why is this often omitted from most PC games, even the console ports.

I find it annoying having to ask someone if they have Teamspeak installed when playing Madden or PES or Tiger Woods then having to join server etc.

Surely this can easily be integrated into PC ports?

Yes it can. But it takes up the gamer servers bandwidth and hence sounds crap to keep the bandwidth down. Cant really see a problem with host a TS or renting a server cheap, for the sound quality I know which i'd have.

I must admit with more and more online team games coming out I'm slightly surprised myself.

That said, most developers probably consider it a waste of time.

Waste of time I think.
Think it's not an efficient use of the game dev's time building it, since the 3rd party apps are the gamer's choice, and would be hard pressed for clans etc to move purely to ingame voip.
Voip I've used while gaming.

Skype
Xfire
TS
Vent

I liked UT2004s inbuilt VOIP as it automatically squelched your games SFX to cut down on feedback. I don't know if 3rd party apps can do that.

i don't like Voip in games. if i want to hear some kid whealping over their mic about how they got owned i'll join a TS/vent server where i can mute them, not in every game i play.

It drove me mad on Xbox live. All you need is one idiot....
Brings out the very worst in people.

Wouldn't let my nephews anywhere near it.
