Volksrod Beach Buggy build project

Hello people,

I've just purchased a Volksrod beach buggy on a 1958 VW chassis. Engine, gearbox are in working order and have recently been rebuilt just needs a lot of cosmetics.

Was just wondering if anyone has experience of buggy restoration or even if anyone has some parts lying around that may come in useful????

Thats the one right there! They make buggy shells aswell having looked on their website. Your views or comments on this would be welcome.

It doesn't even say when the work was done, he could have done it and parked it up for 10 years. Good luck with that.

No it doesn't say when the work was done, but i used that little link labelled "email the seller" and then had my friend go look at it. £582 is not a high price for that at all.

The only work that I will be carrying out on it is the new roll cage build and any welding that needs doing. The buggy will then be going to speed culture which is a local company that carries out restoration.

A well restored buggy of this type, from my research, sells for anything between £2500 - £6000. So I have a £2000 limit to get it looking good. My first priority is to get it fully road legal and then looking good and ready for the summer.

Haven't even thought about colours yet to be honest. I'm having a sit down with the guy from speed culture tomorrow to see what he has in mind.

They seem like a creative bunch down there so I tempted to just say use it as a blank canvas and let them do what they think is best.

Obviously cost is the main concern but with a £2000 budget I think it could be complete. But I may be wrong, does anyone else have views on this?

Cheers for the repsonses. Fortunately the buggy will be seeing no dunes at all, but i'm sure it will be parked at the beach down here in torbay throughout the summer so some sand may get blown under the tyres but thats about all the sand it's going to see.

If it was just me and the missus that were going to be using it then a SWB would definately have been the preferred option but I would definately prefer the extra space in the back for passengers.

Lol at the sit down comment. I have no experience in building or restoring cars whatsoever, and you can find so many unfinished "projects" that people have bought saying they are going to do it over the winter and get it ready for the summer and it just never happens and ends up sitting untouched for months and then getting sold on. Which is why i'm not going to be that person, i'm getting the buggy to people who have a passion for what they do. It makes them happy and the finished product will make me happy.

I will be going in every few weeks to get pics and updates and will keep it posted on here.

At the moment the person I won it from seems very very reluctant to let it go, I think he wanted more for it. But if it goes breasts up i have seen this one for £1800 but I need to take a look at it properly first,

Again thanks for your comments. I think my first priority is to get it fully road legal and then i'm going to concentrate on getting it looking nice.

I would rather spend the money to get it looking nice than to try and save money and have it looking just ok. So if I use the funds I have now to get it kitted out with everything it needs and get it through its MOT and then i can get it looking nice over time.
