Voltage and overclocking - Z77x-UD5H

I know there's a discussion thread, Im slowly making my way through it, but putting this here incase someone can link me to a specific point or has the knowledge ready.


Im trying to overclock my CPU (2500k). On my old board (P8P67 PRO), I could set the multi to 44-47 and leave volts to auto and it would never go higher than 1.36v (CPUz and coretemp rated), now on this board, it overvolts like mad, a simple 4ghz overclock yields over 1.46v (CPUz and coretemp).

Ive gone into BIOS and set the voltage to 1.1v manually (this was for stock clocks) and Ive had this chip stable on lower volts before now on multiple boards, but when I come into OS and run prime, Im getting 1.35v rated.
Taking a quick look through Gigabytes own "Eztune", it says in the advanced tuning tab "Power on = 1.35v"....."Target = 1.1v".


Someone help me understand this stupid board :p
 
power on is at startup/bios screen,target is what it uses in windows

you have to be very carefull of howmuch each llc level adds to the cpu voltage,thats ontop of what gets applied through dynamic vcore(dvid)

you have to set the cpu voltage to normal and then apply extra cpu voltage which is used at load through dvid(which is offset on asus boards)

for 4.5ghz id use high llc and dvid of +0.010v,try that and work from there in tweaking voltages,use less/more dvid or a higher llc level/less dvid or lower llc level/higher dvid ect untill you get what you need to be stable in cpu-z under load
 
I was wondering what that DVID was, is there a way to unlock it? When ever I go on there, its always greyed out.
 
I bought this board last week and had nothing but issues with setting the OC. No matter what the BIOS setting were set too I had 1.440v in CPUz for a 4.2ghz OC. Updated the BIOS loaded defaults, power cycle between profile changes. Set every thing to normal instead of AUTO, nothing stopped the over volt. Was about to RMA the board.

I then though about pressing the cl_cmos button on the motherboard. I dont know why or what diffrence it made but now I have a stable OC of 4.2ghz and a max OC profile of 4.6ghz in my BIOS.

I left every thing on AUTO and as Wazza mentioned setting CPU voltage to normal (1.200v) I set the offset to -0.100v and set the multiplyer to 42. Then did some stress testing if I got a hang or a crash the CPUv offset got upped by 0.025v each time. I now have a stable 4.2ghz (day to day OC) at 1.212v CPUz.
