Voltage keeps going too high!

I have the setup in my sig and have just started to OC it so I finally installed PCProbe so I could keep an eye on the temps and volts, I also installed HWMonitor just as a backup.

Now, every now and then PCProbe will throw up a warning that either the CPU, NB, HT or SB have too high a voltage, any where around 9.13 volts.

HWMonitor however never changes. Is it just PCProbe misreading things and scaring me?

If anything in there hit 9.13 volts it would probably go supernova

Sounds like PCProbe having a fit to be honest mate

HWMonitor is the one I'd believe :)

I use Open Hardware Monitor - very similar - give that one a go for a 3rd oppinion :)

I have also installed Open Hardware Monitor now and it is giving the same readings as HWMonitor. Problem is neither of them give me the voltages like PCProbe does.

That said PCProbe crashed and I am wondering if it is because I updated my BIOS after installing PCProbe.

BIOS and windows programs don't really affect each other... PCProbe would just read the motherboard sensors direct without interracting with the BIOS

CPUz will tell you your core voltage too... give that a download and as long as that, HWMonitor and Open Hardware Monitor give the same readings I'd scrap PCProbe as fubar :)
 
Right, I will install CPUz and uninstall PCProbe then.

Just out of interest, how would you use a multimeter to check CPU voltage or CP-NB voltage? I did not think that it was possible.
 
You need to find the points on the mobo which you can read them off of.

I did it on one of my Asus mobos to check how the pencil mod was effecting my Vdroop.
 
I don't :p. Never needed to tbh. You can check all of the rails from the ATX-24pin, and the mosfets on the motherboard do the rest. Though, why do you need to? I have no doubt there will be test pads on the board to manually check these voltages, but I do not know the location.

I dont need to see the voltage while im using it. it was only because PCProbe had it that I thought it might be good to keep an eye on them while im OCing.

I take it there is no real need to monitor the volts when in windows then?

Did you run PCProbe and HWMonitor (or Open Hardware Monitor) at the same time when the wrong readings (high voltages) occurred? Running PCProbe and other software at the same time can cause conflicts with accessing the hardware, which leads to wrong readings. Running HWMonitor, Open Hardware Monitor or CPU-Z at the same time should not be a problem (as they sync hardware access among them).

It could be that PCProbe uses tables / methods from the BIOS to access hardware sensors. So I would not guarantee that the BIOS update was not the cause of the crash.

Usually there is no real need to monitor voltages in windows. It may be good to take a look at them once to check if everything is right. If the voltages get suddenly to high or to low, then chances are very low you will get to see this in windows before the PC freezes (unstable or damaged). And most of the time you will just get scared by wrong readings.

I did run both PCProbe and HWMonitor together, now I think about it, this started happening after I downloaded HWMonitor and ran them both together (I heard that HWMonitor is better than Coretemp, hence the download).

To be honest, I was not using PCProbe for voltages, just temps. It just loads everything up when you start it (I had not configured it at that point to just load temps) and the volts were there. I did see a slight fluctuation in CPU volts (1.41-1.42), so I just left it there for my own interest really. Then it started scaring me like you said, hence the post. I will try it again without HWMonitor to see what happens.
