Volume fluctuations...

Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of an issue with my new speaker setup I think....

It seemingly has small sound/volume fluctuations, i.e. it goes up and down slightly in volume randomly.

My setup is:

B&W 685 speakers.
Marantz PM6003 amp.
Xonar Essence STX.
Crimson cabling.
Connected via RCA to RCA for the soundcard and amp, and standard banana plugs for the speakers/amp.

Could it be a dodgy connection or is my sound card not seated correctly or something?

Cheers in advance! :)

That's odd, I've known this to happen to older amps where dust gets in the volume pot but for it to happen to a new one is pretty odd.

Try another source like an iPod or something, see if it does it then.

It seems to have stopped all of a sudden, hmmm, I'll try the different source and see as well. Thanks MikeHunt79. :)
Still seems a bit fishy!

Hmmm, it's definitely still happening, what a pain. I've tried other sources too.

  1. I thought it might be my FLAC recordings, but, I've tried other file types and bitrates and it still does it.
  2. I've tried other media players too, still does it
  3. I've tried disconnecting everything, and reconnecting, still does it.

Beyond taking my PC and all the components to the shop I bought the amp and speakers from, I'm not sure what to do.

The only things I think it could be are the amp / speakers / cables / soundcard.

The volume fluctuations are relatively subtle, but it's still enough to make you go 'erm what was that'.

Nightmare.

Ok, try using a program like WinISD to make some sine waves test tones, this way you should be able to clearly hear the volume fluctuations...

Also do you have anything else besides a PC to try as a source such as a DVD player?

I was going to say, as Mike did above, try another source separate from the PC. Then you can determine if it's a PC issue, or something to do with the amp.

Alright chaps, I'll get on the case with WinISD, then go from there. I'll try the dvd player option too. Hopefully be able to report back with some results soon :)

Eureka!

It was a dodgy soundcard. Exchanged it, and all is well in the world :D

Thank you for your suggestions chaps (Mike in particular!), it's as always, most helpful!
