Vortex 3 and 7970M Problem

Hi,

Thinking about getting a 17" Vortex 3 with the 7970M.

Can anyone clarify the 7970m Enduro issue with this laptop.

I understand that some games do not fully utilise the dedicated GPU and revert to the inbuilt GPU and run like a slideshow. Is there anyway around this? I read somewhere that all you need to do is exit the game, right click on the screen and manually set the GPU to the dedicated board? How much of a pain is this issue?

That doesn't get around the utilisation issue, it just makes sure the dGPU is being used for the game and not the iGPU.

Crikey...so this issue has been around for several months...why is it taking ATI/AMD so long to resolve it?

Because this is the first time they have done this, optimus took years to work out.

There is the AMD software which lets you select which graphics an application will use.

But in fairness I've been playing games on our one here and its been fine all day.

That doesn't help the utilisation issue. This is a pretty serious issue which means some games are capped at 20-30fps no matter what graphical settings you use.

It's a real shame as the 7970m is a fantastic card in static dGPU only systems or ones with a hard switch.

I would be mighty peeved if I threw down £1500 on a GAMING laptop only to find out that performance was seriously hamstrung due to crappy drivers.

Would be RMA'd straight back.
