Vortexx Neo burning my 9600GT?

Hi there,

I recently purchased an Akasa Vortexx Neo as I was annoyed by the sound coming from the stock cooler on my 9600GT.

However it appears it doesnt seem to correctly, there are 3 or 4 chips that had 'padding' on them with the stock cooler, but didnt have enough pads to place on them with the Akasa. They weren't memory chips either.

When I placed the Akasa on the temperatures rose quickly and I got a really bad burning smell coming from the cooler :(

Has anyone else had any problems with the 9600GT and this? I have obviously put the stock cooler back on for now and the temps have returned to normal.

I did notice the provided manual does not say it supports the 9600GT, although the Akasa website says it does.

Thanks.

There were a few chips which weren't covered by the actual fan itself, would getting so ram sinks for them do the task? Or does it sound like something else is wrong?

I'm not sure about this at all. I've only seen this on a 4850/70.

Hopefully someone will post and give you a little info. Welcome to OCUK btw :).

Sounds like you might have fitted it incorrectly, or it's fubared. I fitted one of these to my 8800GT the other day, without fitting any other heatsinks, has worked flawlessly.

vortexx neo

Recently fitted one of these to a gigabyte 8800gt and noticed that
the aluminium plate which is ment to cover the ram chips on the card
does not quiet cover all of them completely, but is not enough to worry
about. The area you mention are the cards voltage regulators you could
use ram heat sinks, but the instructions do state that the fan is designed
in such a way to cool these. If your 9600gt is the same layout as a 8800gt
then i can only think the cooler wasn't seated correctly or a faulty cooler.
I am getting idle temps of 44c and load 55c, before with rivatuner fan control
at 60% temps of 55c and 100% fan temps of 65c when playing cod4 etc.
Used zalman super thermal grease not the supplied !
Definately better than stock cooler blue glow and quiet!

As above i fitted one on an 8800gt and it fits fine. I think they layout is very similar if not identical on the 9600gt.

Getting load temps of 45C with a card clocked at 700 core and 1000 memory

you sure it was tightended evenly? its ment to be a pretty good cooler. You didnt mention anything about temps in the OP, i prosume they where really high ? If not it could be dust cooking in the heat sink :S pretty extream idea, but you cant rule it out i suppose :S
