Got g/f vostro today and the bottom of the screen is practically white when on a black background, is this a normal thing for laptops and nothing ot worry about or should i be looking to get it replaced? Has faint white at top but really noticable at the bottom. About 1cm or more thick the white is.

This is known as 'bleeding' almost all laptops screens bleed. Not noticeable unless the screen is black. Mine bleeds slightly at the bottom. Don't think you can return the laptop because of bleeding though.

its the 1440x900, it is only really noticeable on dark screens but its not just a little THIN line, its like 1 or 2 cm thick :|

g/f wants to just leave it as she dont wanna wait even longer on laptop, seems silly to put up with a fault tho if it IS a fault.

My MacBook doesn't bleed, however both the Dell Latitude 131L and Fujitsu Siemens Amillo did. The Dell was very bad for it. Then again cheap Dells are bad for this as the build quality on them is worse than a French car. :( The expensive ones are not much better...

I have the same issue. yes u can get a replacement. dell are shipping terrible quality panels atm, and they know it, their QA is letting what i would only describe as defective panels out. you have to see how bad it is to believe it, its like a lcd out of the 90's. without moving your head the top and bottom of the screen are different colours. thats under 30 degree viewing angle! also very grainy, making web browsing very hard on the eye. do a search for it on dell forums. same panel as you i have, 17" 1440x900, non true-life. i think the good ones are LG.

From my experience (and I have ordered hundreds of Dell laptops) they have never fitted a good panel in their laptops. They are, after all, cheap for a reason. ;)

Yes the Dell panels have been fairly poor lately.

I have a 1440x900 on my Vostro 1500, ordered about 3 months ago, and it is absolutely fantastic. I can't praise the screen enough, really is fantastic.

But yes, yours is faulty and Dell will replace it if you decide to return it. It's really a matter of whether it bothers you (or, in fact, your girlfriend) enough to send it back.

I had to go through ordering about 6 dells, and returning them till I got one with a screen I was happy with. Didn't matter if it was a top of the range like a 1710 or bottom of the range one, the screens are very inconsistent.
