VP6 + 7600GT, mysterious artifacts in certain games

Hi all

i'm hoping someone here can help me with a rather odd and somewhat saddening problem i am experiencing with my (old!) setup.

i've had this abit VP6 motherboard for nigh on 6 years now and i've been running it quite happily on a geforce2GTS and fairly recently a 5200fx - both of these cards worked fine in the mobo.

i recently got into some fairly demanding games and the 5200fx just didnt cut it anymore so i went out and got a 7600GT, observing the required specs - agp 2.0 port and a 300watt psu - both of which i have.

so i plug it in and fire up one of my favourite games and admire the new capabilities (see http://img395.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gw005st3.jpg). i test out another one and im suprised to see strange things on the screen (see http://img478.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tmborkxz5.jpg)

it is weird that it only happens with certain applications - so far 3dmark03 and trackmania (both nations and sunrise) exhibit these anomolies. guildwars, however, runs beautifully.

at this point i was running on a 300watt psu so i thought mm maybe its power issues (at this time i didnt know just how incredibly efficient the 7600gt is with power (36w!)), so i went out and got a new 500watt psu - fired the rig up again, same problem.

so i took the 7600gt and plugged it into my other machine (which is an old athlon gigabyte board) and quite guttingly it worked like a dream. this brings me onto the problem and a call for help:

it would seem as though this 7600gt is not compatible with my abit vp6 motherboard, even though it meets the specs - can anyone explain why this is the case? is there any way i can resolve this?

ive tried almost all combinations in the bios (takes a lot of time) enabling/disabling x4 (my board was never so stable with x4 enabled for some reason) enabling/disabling fast writes, changing the aperture size etc - nothing seems to make this problem go away :(

the spec of my system is as follows:

abit vp6 motherboard (more info (old!) http://www.vp6-board.com/)
2x1GHz P3 @ 133FSB
1.5GB 133MHz SDRAM @ 2-2-2-5 timings
Point of View GeForce 7600GT
500watt igreen coolermaster PSU
2x160GB Maxtor DiamondMax HDD's
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy
3Com EtherLink XL LAN PCI card

tried the latest hyperion drivers as well as the older ones recommended for my chipset, still no luck - board bios is the latest available - tried removing all other cards etc - no luck.

maybe someone out there also has a vp6 with a 7600gt and has experienced the same problems? its really hard finding any information on my mobo as its so old :(

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks for reading my rant!

I think you've done everything I would suggest, so maybe its time for a new motherboard/CPU/RAM.
