In theory I'm getting a FTTC connection next week.

I’ll need a new router, and it’ll need to be able to act as an endpoint for a site-to-site IPSec VPN connection (the remote site is using a Vigor 2830).

I’m currently planning on getting a Vigor 2920.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper alternative?

I can't comment on that - I don't get Infinity until Monday! However, there was discussion about the router in the big BT Infinity thread and nobody mentioned you had to use the Openreach modem. I'd expect if there were issues BT would only help if you were using their modem but I'd have no problem plugging it back in for troubleshooting purposes.

heres the low down:
Infinity: BT install a new master socket on after agreeing where you want the first point on the line to be depneding on your exsisting wiring
They wall mount a VDSL openreach modem that is their demarcation point, that is their property and they replace if it goes faulty of its own accord
Then that modem has a lan port to connect to a pppoE router
