VPN from iOS to OS X

Complete VPN noob here.

I want to control my 10.8.4 iMac on the move via VPN. I see the option to set up a VPN via iOS so assume you can do similar on OS X. Is this a difficult thing to set up and use? What do I need? If its relevant my router is an Asus NT-66U running the merlin firmware.

What do you need to do exactly on your iMac remotely? May be a case that something easier to setup would be Teamviewer or VNC rather than go the VPN route

VPN will give you access to your local network if your router supports it. There are easier and better solutions for single remote PC access as mentioned above.
