Hi, in a bit of a mess if anyone could shed some light please?
We have a hosted windows 2012R2 server running a customer management package and a handful of remote workers using this software. The package offers a web interface which they are all using but it's not the fastest thing and has a few other issues such as timing out and making the staff keep logging in all the time.
The other way is to install the software on each pc and this should work much better but being on a remote server each remote pc would need to access the database. I've started to look at setting up a VPN connection to then map a drive to to allow this to work but am getting quite stuck and confused with it.
I've setup the server to be a VPN server, I've added the VPN connection to one of the pc's, and I can now get to the point where it will connect to the VPN successfully. Problem is now I cannot for the life of me map a drive over it or even ping the server via this connection.
Somehow though I have managed to map a drive directly to the server on it's wan ip which I didn't think was possible just over the internet, this actually works fine and the software can see the database and work perfectly. But I assume I've done something wrong for an internet mapped drive to work and it's probably not secure - it will work with or without the vpn actually being connected.
Anyone got any pointers at all? I think I'm on the right path but just can't see how to finish it all off. I've read a load of internet guides but they all seem to end at the point of being able to connect which I can do already.
Thanks for any help
