I'm looking into first time hosting for my website and was looking at what options are available.

My website
Java
SSL

My requirements.

I want to keep initial costs low but as my needs grow I want to be able to upgrade easily and migrate to a better option.

I have had a search of the forums and the looked at the recommended hosting options but they seem to be too high (£30-£40/mo).

Should I go for VPS or dedicated?

What are my options? (If I need to provide more information then please let me know)

I don't know - I'm considering my options.

If I can get a dedicated server for a good price then my website hosting needs will be satisfied a long while - no need to migrate if my website traffic/users increase.

I realize this might not be an option due to cost - so what are my options? Should I go with a VPS server? What are the limitations and disadvantages of doing so?

For all you hosting needs you can check out Webhost UK they can help you with your hosting needs as they offer all from shared hosting to dedicated hosting, they are reliable and cheap using them from last 5 years.

This is called premature optimisation, and is going to cost you a lot of money. You should go with the cheapest possible option that will satisfy your current requirements, and move up as and when the requirements change. If it's difficult to migrate your site, then you are doing something wrong. The difference in cost between a hosted website and a dedicated host (virtual or physical) is massive, and multiplied out month over month, will add up quickly.

For something like Java (I'm assuming you'll be wanting Tomcat) and if you know where you are with a server then a cheap VPS should be fine to get started. Something from Digital Ocean should be OK, but bear in mind the RAM requirements of Java are generally higher than a lot of other apps. Amazon EC2 also has a free tier, but the performance can be very variable since you're not guaranteed any CPU performance so you'd only really want to use it for basic testing.

As above, until you're live and know the full requirements of your app and how many users you'll be expecting it's not worth going for a dedicated system.

Thanks for the replies.

Migrating my website will not be a problem but I will need to migrate the data.

webhost.uk look ok but they aren't cheap.

Do you have any suggestions on hosting company?

Yes daz, I will need an instance of Tomcat to deploy the web application. What do you consider a cheap VPS solution?

Digital Ocean or Linode should do the job whilst also being fairly reliable. It looks like you're looking at $20 per month for 2GB of RAM or $40 for 4GB, so it really depends on how large your application is. Have you run/tested locally yet?

Yes developed it locally and 2gb will be plenty of memory in it's current state.

Will read up on DigitalOcean and Linode.

Thanks daz.

I imagine they'll both have images for Apache and Tomcat on Ubuntu or CentOS as well so you should be able to get up and running pretty quickly.

Backing up what others have said, if you need Java/TomCat then a VPS is probably your best bet; i don't know of any hosts that offer Java/TomCat on their 'standard'/'cloud' packages.

Digital Ocean is a good shout, although it's worth having a look on Lowendbox.com or vpsboard.com for unmanaged VPS's but take precaution on these sites as while there are a few decent VPS hosts on there, there's a lot that aren't.

Did have a look at Vidahost and tsohost but the prices seemed a little high. Will take another look.
Both are managed services, so prices are about right; going unmanaged will get you something a lot cheaper but at the cost of 'headaches' as you're solely responsible for it.

I'm reluctant to go down the lowendbox or vpsboard route as, although cheap, I need something more reliable. And also there is the "trust" factor with the data.

I would like to go with Vidahost/TsoHost - but the cost is high. But then I would also like the speed/reliability good.

I'll investigate Digital Ocean first. If this is not an option then I might make an initial 12 month investment with vidahost/tsohost. I've still got a few months before the website will be ready so have plenty of time to investigate.

Haven't used them, but have heard plenty of good things about Digital Ocean.

I've had a quick look at the docs and tutorials on digital ocean and it seems that this might be the best option for now.

You can install tomcat and anything else on your server which suits me nicely. I plan to use this initially and then can migrate when required.

Thanks for your help.
