Hi, I'm currently using a Shared Hosting account at UK2 and its gone to crap lately... We were looking at getting our own dedicated server but they're so expensive... £70-90 a month.

Then we were recommended to try a VPS... could anyone recommend these?
I'm running an online browser game and probably have about 20 players online at once at any time during the day... how many 'nodes' or how much CPU,RAM would you think that something like this would need? Sorry if its a little generic but I know absolutely nothing about VPS Hosting :D

Just that for about £28 for...
Dedicated CPU: 0.8GHz
RAM: 512MB

Seems a little expensive... How much would I need to spend a month to to get something quicker than a shared hosting account running on 8GB RAM and a good CPU? I can imagine these shared hosting accounts are shared between hundreds of users.

Thanks, Dom

UK2's recent problems have been shared/caused by VPS.net which is owned by them - vps.net suffered two huge DDOS attacks which also affected the UK2 network. Just as a heads up really :)

Where are most of your players - if there are only 20ish people online at any time just find some decent shared hosting.

Most people here will mention TSOHost and Vidahost if you are hosting for UK based people.

Like Beansprout said, the DDoS didn't help UK2 :)

If cost is your absolute and #1 concern, then you can't get much cheaper than Kimsufi. Their servers are based in France but you can get a cheapo dedicated server or VPS for ~£20 a month. Network is pretty good. If anything goes wrong - server down - network down etc, don't expect much in the way of service at all though... i think their turnaround is 72 hours on most things. :o
