Hi,

I currently have a shared slot on a server with a hosting company, but its getting slow, and I only seem to have a need to add more and more onto it(not to mention whoelse has what running on it!)

Currently looking at a good price for a VPS, hosted in the UK, ideally with approx 50Gb HDD, good bandwidth allowance, and no cap on domains/accounts. If it comes with DirectAdmin(usually £5pm extra of most companies) then even better.

If anyone can recommend a company or 2 for me to have a look at. Looking around the £20 a month give or take a little.

It depends, you opt for one of the 'lower' base packages and then bung on the extra disk?

~£35 a month

meh, nm - that's still too much!

Main thing to check when comparing virtual server providers isn't the specs on the website... but the specs that *aren't* on the website.

Typically, ask about the type of disk set up they're using - SATA or SAS? RAID? SAN? More expensive providers tend to use faster SAS based arrays (hence more expensive disk space upgrades) whilst cheaper providers will stick in two slow 2TB drives in RAID1. You'll notice the difference when it comes to database performance and anything involving any disk i/o. Another big issue is CPU contention - RAM is so cheap these days, a lot of providers will load up a box with 144GB of RAM and put 100 or more virtual servers on there.

I recommend Checking out LowEndBox. I got a VPS from there. I've had it for 3months and uptime is 100%! Good specs etc.
Strongly recommend.

Forget UK, forget VPS and look at kimsufi, if your looking at low end and no HA on the VPS then you'd be mad not to. It's still EU (france actually) so latency is just fine and you can have an atom box for £14 or a quad core i5 for £36 - dedicated hardware for those prices - what's not to like?

I don't suppose you have links to any reviews do you? Those prices are mega-tempting but I've never heard of these guys before... :)

Snap! Prices look amazing! Even their VPS's are well priced! It would be good to find soem reviews here and there though. Ok, it's not hosted in UK, but like you say, France isn't that far and would be fine.
Question is, what would it be like to host multiple(20-50 sites) on the atom box? Only a 1.2GHz machine, might need a bit more grunt, but it's quite a step from £14 per month to their £35 for the i5 DS

On the whole they're reasonable but they're part of OVH and my experience is hit and miss. Note that Kimsufi uses desktop hardware rather than server grade, hence the low prices.

Either way, have a look at Lowendbox, their forums (Lowendtalk.com) or on WHT. You'll find plenty of reviews.

Still there are plenty of decent LEB VPS providers in the UK that have personally offered me better support and performance than Kimsufi/OVH.

They're part of OVH as mentioned and so have that level of service (ie, not great but not terrible and a reputable company at the end of the day. Google OVH reviews will turn up some stuff).

If you're wanting basic hosting and it matters if it breaks I'd always suggest having two boxes, sync the sites hourly and keep your DNS ttls low. Most providers are going to have an issue every so often, technology and the law of averages tends to fall out like that. I'd rather bet on my own resiliency rather than anybodies support.

Hetzner (hetzner.de) are a similar offering, £40 ish for a quad core i7 based machine. I know a few guys who buy one, install ESXi or KVM and carve it up into half a dozen VPSs for themselves and friends.

I am also looking for a more reliable webhost I have about 10 sites currently hosted with FH but service I have encountered is terrible, most of my sites are forums and standard html with a few written in asp.net, need a somewhat reliable company but do not know who to choose!
