Something I am seriously looking forward to is VR and Nvidia have their finger on the button and showing off what is what at Gamescom with the Rift and the Vive. The Vive has seriously got my attention as well and will be released later this year. I can see me jumping straight on it. Anyone else?

I've been holding out on the Rift Dev kit as didn't want to hamper my opinion on VR before it's ready to launch. I was a big fan of 3D when the application suited it, VR will take that to a new level. There are games where VR won't improve the experience maybe, but the horror genre and shooters...really want to see what goes that tailor for VR can do

Been anxious for all things vr / ar since their announcement. I was certain I'd be getting an oculus, but the vive sounds like the better experience. However, knowing how much research and fine tuning oculus have been doing, I'm a little skeptical that the vive will pull it off without issues on such a short development time (comparatively)

My thoughts as well D3K. The Vive is a little unknown entity to me and just suddenly crept up but it does look really promising.

Yes and no, Valve have been working on VR for years longer than oculus, the rift actually incorporates a lot of tech (and staff) stolen/borrowed from Valve's prototype back when Valve said they weren't going to be releasing a product

positional tracking via IR as well as the dual screen approach were both adopted from Valve by Oculus, it also shows in that Vive will be to market sooner than OR and Oculus are still playing catch up

however, OR have the money and are working on lots of exclusive content... basically at the moment it is almost looking like you are going to need both depending on what games you want to play

and I still have reservations on whether the resolution is really high enough, it isn't a big jump from 1920x1080 to 2160x1200

Looks good, but I don't think I could have much of a gaming session before that thing on my head started to irritate me.
Looks far to big and heavy to be comfortable for a decent amount of time.

I played Alien Isolation at a mates house as he has the latest dev kit and holy hell it brought a whole new level to the game, It's like you're actually there.

As soon as the proper Rift lands it's mine !!!

Good info. I remember you saying before about the res and how it needed to be higher and this does kinda have me worried but I would rather they did that and if that required me to buy another TX/Pair of cards, then that is cool but I would hate them to skip on the res.

I think it will be quite a few years yet before 3D starts to become more mainstream. I've played around with the Rift on and off for a while now but it just seems to be taking too long to come to the market. By the time they do I think someone else might have gotten something better out to the market and they will have missed an opportunity.

with stuff like multi-res rendering you probably won't even need more GPU power

I am relatively a vr 'expert', DK2 is great but very uncomfortable and nothing works, its been suggested that HTC wont be able to fully launch the Vive within such a short timescale so it will initially be limited supply come november time, apparently it will be available from the HTC website initially rather than being pushed via Steam.

If you aren't aware the main advantage the vive has over the rift is its lighthouse tracking system which uses laser scanning towers, it can track a large number
of sensor points anywhere within a large space including 3rd party controllers, whereas the rift can only track the headset when its within the field of vision of the specialized camera, so maybe half the size, its probably optimized for sitting down, the DK2 tracking camera is not up to scratch really, but I've heard the new one is improved. The advantage the rift has is that their 1st party controllers can do finger tracking, which the Vives cannot, however the oculus controllers will not be bundled with the rift and will be delayed, so that advantage is mitigated to a large extent, also the rift is supposedly launching after the vive by at least a couple of monthes.

Im buying one as soon as possible its my dream since first helmets and playing Duke Nukem 3D on it !!!!

Same for me. Vive will be first, so that is where I will be buying.

I'll certainly give one a go, it depends on launch titles and what gets announced support on both sides, pcars and star citizen will be the games im most likely to be playing

If Vive isn't a big improvement over DK2 then it'll get sold on pretty quickly, hopefully stocks will be short so it'll be no loss

DK2 is a tad uncomfortable for long periods. Basically wearing goggles thats how it feels despite the padding. Has to be lighter and more comfortable.
Hope rift v vive isnt gonna be another betamax v vhs with games coded exclusively for one or the other.

Valve are trying to get an "open"-ish format going, saying SteamVR will support a variety of headsets as well as their own. Then you've got Razer with OSVR which there are several headsets and peripheral makers aiming to support. And then you've got Oculus and their Rift who aren't really aiming to support anyone else but seem to have the best current support by developers.

Games are going to have to choose which platform(s) they support, and I am guessing that some of that will come down to money.

So yes, begun the VR wars have.
