Morning All,

I'm in the process of building a new system and I'm lucky enough that my wife got me a quest 2 for xmas. Problem is the PC build isn't finished and I'm still running a GTX 970.
I was looking at a 6800xt/ 3080 (I know supply is high) and wondering what peoples thoughts were on the 6800/ 3060ti?
Would they be able to strive a 1440p Ultrawide/ VR (as I guess it's like having 2 X 2K screens?) Ultrawide monitor is 3440x1440.

My 5700xt can drive 3440x1440 np, so a 6800xt/3080 should have no issues at all.
I had no issues with VR on the Oculus rift either, but obviously newer headsets have higher resolution - but again the 6800xt/3080 are quite a bit faster than the 5700xt, so shouldn't be a problem.

Would agree with above. Should not have any real issues. Run a couple of GTX 1080Tis in one rig with usually just one enabled connected to a 3440 x 1440 monitor. Given both the 6800 and 3060Ti from reviews offer more performance then the 1080Ti, I suspect you will have a great experience. In new games with 1080Ti may need to notch down the demanding settings which is hardly surprising but pair it with VRR and combination still works reasonably well.

The 6800 is more capable then the 3060Ti though but just as hard to fund as the 6800XT. The 3060Ti is only releasing today and from reviews stock seems slightly more plentiful, but expect to sell out quick aswell.

If it's a 60Hz 3440x1440p then the 3060ti is just fine. If it is a higher refresh rate then the 3060ti is mostly good enough ( for older games ) but for the very latest games then I would suggest a 3080. I have no idea about VR, I don't have a VR system.

Sorry yes, the monitor is 144Hz! I can't see there being an issue with notching the games down as the 970 currently can't play some of the basic games in med anymore!

I would say the 3080 then. It should see you good for some years. Even with the most recent titles you should be hitting 70fps with the 3060ti but over 100fps with the 3080.

In the same boat but already have a nearly 2yr old 2080ti still going strong, so likely to stick with that for a while.

The cards you mention will be more than enough for a decent 3440x1440 with Ray Tracing, etc.

I recently got Control, which is taxing with RT but at 3440x1440, DLSS and RT High, I mainly hover around 70fps. The cards you list, are a lot better at general rasterisation and 3080 better again at RT.

Not many decent VR benchmark reviews about but this is a good one and shows you, whilst there's not much in it, nvidia still beats out AMD in VR when comparing 3080/6800XT...

If I do upgrade, I'd like to go AMD but with likely 3080ti potentially coming as early as January that is probably where my money will go. Interested though to see how AMD drivers improve, AMDs implementation of Super Resolution to combat DLSS and how the 6900XT performs.

I have a Super Ultrawide Monitor (5120 x 1440) and I've decided on a 3090 to drive it. I might have gone for a 3080 if there had been any to buy but I couldn't wait forever.

As you're on a less taxing resolution a 3070 might suffice, again if you can find one on sale.

I also have a VR headset but I haven't yet used it with the 3090. I came from a 1080 and that was not able to cope with max settings and keep the frame rate above 90fps. With VR, I think the extra vram on the 3090 might help and I would say go for the 3080 as a minimum there for sure.

Thanks for the info I think its very much going to be a case of returning all my kit to where i brought it from and rolling the dice next year. I dont want the kit to sit in the office for 4-5 months and tbh i dont really feel like trying to deal with a potential DOA product and trying to explain/ return it well past the 30 day order period. I'll keep the screen and get the wife to return the VR while I return all the parts and wait until next year. May lose £30 in return postage but will save in the long run given the inflated pricing.
